Why I built this
"I didn't build BetterPlate to lose weight. I built it so healthy food didn't have to mean boring food."
Seven years ago I was 117kg. I joined a gym and lost 20kg purely through calorie counting. I never changed how I ate or what I ate — I just ate less of the same bad stuff. After about a year, I stopped going, and crept back up to around 103–104kg. My food habits hadn't changed at all, so the only way I'd been maintaining any kind of weight was by eating practically one meal a day. I kept that up for five or six years.
5 months ago, I decided enough was enough. This time it wasn't just about losing weight — I had to actually get healthier. Better diet, more movement, long game.
What I figured out quickly was that I love food. Especially, like so many people, takeaways. I was never that person who eats to live — I live to eat. And I didn't want to stop eating what I enjoyed. So I started recreating those dishes at home, making small healthier swaps with ingredients, or just changing the way I cooked something. Healthy chicken curry. Pepperoni pizza. Hot dogs and chips. Loaded chicken and fries. All lower calorie, higher protein, higher fibre — still delicious.
I realised eating healthily doesn't have to mean plain, boring food like "chicken and broccoli" every day. It just means being smarter about what goes into your food, and how you cook things.
I now eat well 80–90% of the time — but I don't for a second feel like I'm on a diet. That's BetterPlate. Your food, made better.
